Muhammad Hassaan Ahmed receives the Will Shadish Graduate Student Fellowship

October 7, 2025

Muhammad Hassaan Ahmed, a Ph.D. student in Mechanical Engineering, has been awarded the prestigious Will Shadish Graduate Student Fellowship, a selective fellowship awarded annually to a UC Merced graduate student who has outstanding achievements in research and teaching.

Hassaan's research investigates how the mechanics of bending and twisting in biological filaments, such as DNA, influence their biological function—with the long-term goal of advancing translational health applications like gene therapy and cancer treatment. He is developing computational and inverse modeling tools to uncover how atomic-scale structures determine mechanical behavior in these critical systems.

In addition to his research accomplishments, Hassaan has demonstrated exceptional dedication to teaching and mentorship. As instructor of record for an undergraduate course, he transformed student learnability by integrating technology and interactive tools. He also introduced innovative computational labs, developed GUI-based educational modules, and mentored several undergraduate researchers—including an Opportunity Fellow—while fostering inclusive learning environments that promote student growth and achievement.

Congratulations, Hassaan!
